I was eating some pickle spears in the cafeteria when all of the sudden I came upon a odd question. Are pickles good for you? If so, are they considered to be a vegetable or a fruit? I never realized until now how controversial of a subject this could be. As we all know, the pickle is another form of a cucumber. Often times cucumbers and tomatoes are associated with vegetables, especially when it comes to salad. With this being said, I looked up articles that talk about what exactly a cucumber is. According to an article I found, scientifically speaking cucumbers are a fruit. The reason why so many people consider it to be a vegetable is because in the culinary world it is in fact a vegetable. It has seeds with tissue around it, but it is always thrown in with the vegetable group. No matter what it is, cucumbers are a light snack with very few calories and so are pickles if they are not infatuated with salt or sugar. I suppose that it is a matter of personal opinion as to whether or not the cucumber is a fruit or a vegetable. You can learn more about this at http://www.buzzle.com/articles/is-cucumber-a-fruit-or-vegetable.html
What?! I never knew cucumbers were a fruit! When you said cucumbers were fruits, I was like "What?!". Veggie Tales is going to have to kill off another character along with the tomato. :( I agree that it would definitely be known that it is a veggie for cooking. It only seems that that is what it can be! Thanks for blogging. You're the best!

Dear Kayla,
ReplyDeleteWhile reading your blog, I came upon a question myself: "Who gives two shits if pickles are vegetables or fruits?!" Sure, I'm sure some nerds out there want some scientific factual crap to determine it, but in the end, what good does it do? It's like the crappy gen ed history courses that UCA makes us take. If you're gonna be a math major, why the HELL would you need to take history??? Anyways... back on topic. When you said "scientifically speaking cucumbers are a fruit," I was shocked! How the flying spaghetti shit are cucumbers fruits? Pssssssh, whatever! Anyways, I guess your blog was KIND OF interesting... But it's still a stupid question that people work so hard to try to answer. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS BLOG!!!!!! YOU ARE SOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOL.

To be honest i was at lunch today and actually thought the same thing. i always thought they were a vegtable but to hear that they could be a fruit also is cool i guess. this is one of those questions u think about once and really dont give a fuck afterwards in the end its still a damn pickle!!! haha thank you for your post im glad we can read each other minds

Dear Kayla,
ReplyDeleteWho knew that cucumbers weren't a vegetable? I know I sure didn't. I have always considered them vegetables like the rest of the world.
It doesn't surprise me that it is considered a fruit technically, yet I think it's ironic how the national food guide pyramid and my nutrition textbook consider it a vegetable.
Cucmbers are very healthy. They are made up of mostly water. Plus, the cellulose with keep you fuller longer.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS! Keep up the good work!
Sincerely, Sebastian
Dear Kayla,
ReplyDeleteCucumbers are fruits!?!? What the f? What is the world coming to? Where did you even find this? Well I have now had my mind blown up for the day. And how is it that most of the leading nutrition advising groups don't agree on whether or not it is a fruit or vegetable? This stuff is just crazy!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS BLOG!!!

Dear Kayla,
ReplyDeleteWow I never knew that cucumbers were a fruit? That's really odd but interesting! I wouldn't think a pickle could be a fruit. Even though cucumbers are "said" to be fruits I still consider that and pickles vegetables. It is so controversial.. but interesting to see what everyone has to say about this topic. Thanks for this post, definitely one of the most interesting I've read!!
Dear Flabfood
ReplyDeleteI never thought of it that way, I always thought pickles were vegetables because they derived from cucumbers. Could cucumber be a fruit, seems possible. It does have its own seeds which fruit does contain. It's able to be compared to the tomato because it too is considered to be a fruit instead of a vegetable. Hmm, what will they do about this one. This is a thoughtful post, keep up the good work.
